Trying Babylock’s Flutter Sleeve Top Pattern

There was a top pattern from Babylock Japan that I’d been curious about for a while, but I never got around to making it. It’s the Flared Sleeve Pullover pattern below.

I wasn’t sure about the flutter-style sleeves, especially since the only reference image showed the garment hanging on a hanger. But after finishing another sewing project, I realised I had just enough fabric left over, so I decided to finally give it a try.

Pattern & Steps

The sewing pattern and instructions I used, without any modifications this time, were from the downloadable files on Babylock Japan’s website:

There was one part of the instructions that I found a bit unclear:
In step 5, when attaching the flutter sleeves to the armhole, sew the longer curve of the triangular underarm fabric with it.

Finished top

Here’s what the top looked like after sewing it up according to the original pattern.

Trying it on

Overall, the top is very comfortable to wear. The neckline and underarm panels don’t feel restrictive, which was a pleasant surprise, and the length is OK.

That said, the sleeves have more volume than I personally prefer for my shoulder shape, giving my shoulders a more rounded, bulkier appearance when my arms are down.

While the design is interesting, I think I’ll stick to simpler sleeve silhouettes.
