Easy DIY Rain Gaitors

Short boots are easier, but even with a long raincoat on, the lower calf of my pants get wet.

So I bought some tricot-backed waterproof vinyl in matt black from Homecraft Textiles, and DIY’ed some rain gaitors!

Making the rain gaitors

To make a gaitor, the waterproof fabric was cut to 50cm x 35cm.

The fabric was folded in half vertically, inside out, and serged together from top to bottom to make a tube.

Elastic casing was created at the top and bottom of the tube by folding the edges in about 1.5cm and sewing it around, leaving a gap to insert elastic.

8mm-wide elastic of length 41cm was inserted and tied inside the top casing, and elastic of length 33cm was inserted and tied inside the bottom casing.

And that was pretty much it!

Trying them out

I had a test walk in them; they’re comfy and they don’t fall down. 😊

This leg warmer style rain gaitors work great!

No need for straps to keep them in place, the opening stretches well to cover the top of all my short boots, and my pants stay dry.
