DIY Scrunchie

These bi-colour frilly scrunchies have elastic through the centre casing. They’re soft and comfy when made with double gauze cotton fabric and thick Japanese elastic.

Using double gauze cotton fabric makes the scrunchie extra soft and gentle, so it feels nice whether you’re wearing it in your hair or around your wrist.

How to make

Cut two pieces of fabric to 60 x 8cm.

Face the fabrics inside out, fold the short ends outwards by 1cm, and sew the long sides together.

Once sewn into a tube, turn the scrunchie right way out.

Draw two lines 1.5cm apart along the middle of the scrunchie long-ways. Sew along those lines to make an elastic casing.

Cut 23cm of thick hair elastic.

Insert the elastic through the centre casing.

Tie the elastic ends together. Check that it fits your wrist comfortably.

Sew the ends of the scrunchie together; Use the folded edges to sew in a zig zag so the thread becomes hidden.

Scrunchie is complete!

This is loosely inspired by Nuinavi’s double frill shu-shu recipe without the extra trims.

Alternative method (for a stronger scrunchie)

This method makes a stronger scrunchie, by sewing the short ends together with a sewing machine first.

Cut two pieces of fabric to 60 x 8cm. (Same as before)

Sew the long ends together, right sides together.

Sew the short ends together to make a tube, leaving a gap in the middle of one side.*

*The gap should be at the middle of one side (ie. pink or blue side) and big enough for elastic to be inserted.

How to sew a waistband or scrunchie

Once it’s become a tube, fold the top layer towards the middle so it gets out of the way.

Then fold the bottom layer’s long edges together, and start sewing them closed. Pull the inside out towards you as you sew around.

Keep about 8cm unsewn, and use that gap to pull the scrunchie right way out.

Once it’s right way out, sew the gap closed.

Sew twice around the loop to make an elastic casing down the middle.

Insert elastic through the gap made earlier, and tie a knot.

Pull the scrunchie to pull the elastic inside. Complete!

The elastic

When I’m making my own hair tie or scrunchie, I use Daiso’s Long Hair Band (Thick, 2x1m) [日本製ロングゴム太] for the elastic. Being made in Japan, they stretch well and return well; and hair stays up better.

I cut them so they’ll be comfy around my wrist after I tie a knot (22~23cm).
